Girl Scouts

Here is a link to Sophie's Daisy Scout troop's blog page. There are pictures of them making dog treats for the animal shelter.

Gulf Coast Trip

Me, Greg, and the kids took a field trip to Gulfport Tuesday for a homeschool group field trip. We visited the Institute for Marine Mammal Research. It was pretty interesting. We watched a film, and then got to visit with some ocean creatures in the touch pool. Mainly crabs- several different types, and we learned how to tell boys from girls! We also visited with a bearded dragon, listened to a Dr. Seuss story about sea creatures, and "dug" for sea shells, wich they got to keep.

The highlight of the trip, though, was the beach. I figured it would be too cold to do more than put our feet in and then go, but it was sunny and it quickly warmed up. There were several people actually out swimming, though I think it was a little too cold for that. The girls had a lot of fun splashing around in the water. We discovered several jellyfish washed up on shore. I looked them up and I think they are cannonball jellyfish. They supposedly produce only a *mild* sting- luckily we didn't find out! I don't know if they can still sting or cause a rash once they're dead or not, either.

This trip really made me want to move to the coast, or at least visit more often! Being near the beach just feels like a totally different world.
